SXSW 2011
This mix is by (the Irish!) State Magazine and is about South by Southwest.
Why it’s Pretentious: Okay, we get it, everyone and their mother is at SXSW, except for me. Since I’m so pretentious, my mouth says “pssh, have fun at that self-indulgent over-publicized industry suckfest” but my heart screams “please take me with you!” If you’re like me and need to live vicariously through other people, this mix features a bunch of bands playing SXSW and — bonus! — has a distinctly spring-like indie pop feel, with just a hint of fuzz. Hey, baby, it’s like… I’ll fix your everything. I’ll give up everything. For you.

36. i want a rhythm to compliment my groove
This mix is about the first day of school, junior year.
Why It’s Pretentious: A lot of the time, mixes that I make are actually responses to other mixes. That way, when I start yet another one with Miles Fisher, I can pretend I’m being clever because don’t you see the subtle — nay, coy — reference. This mix is about all the songs I liked this summer that weren’t by Jeff the Brotherhood or Diarrhea Planet. I hope that when I officially start Pretentious Mixtapes I Made In College, I will still consider Jojo’s “Paint” to be “my jam” and Pitbull into The Drums to be one of the most inspired transitions of all time. In conclusion, Beyonce is pregnant? You guys, I don’t have TV.

MMXI

This mix is about my jams of 2011.
Why It’s Pretentious: Internet, I have few flaws— but my one fatal flaw is being bad at making end of year lists. In my mind, “the end of the year” is just the short way of saying “the most anxious and nerve-wracking time of the year.” First, everyone’s birthday is coming up (Jesus, my old roommate, my current roommate, my future roommate, my honorary roommate…) so I’m plummeting headfirst into holiday-induced poverty. Second, my grasp on the length of a year is loose at best. I still operate on school years; to me, 2011 starts sometime around late August 2010. At the same time, August 2010 - July 2011 is a little fuzzy. Therefore, most of my end of year list-making is actually me consulting Wikipedia before yelling “that album didn’t come out this year?!”
To make things easier on me, here are 11 songs I was really into in 2011 that also came out in 2011. Full disclosure: there’s probably a disproportionate amount of Infinity Cat bands. However, there’s also Beyonce, so…
