Summerines

This mix is by ispeakintunes and is about summer.

Why It’s Pretentious: I want to take a second to talk about something serious that I had to go through the other day. I had to sell my Bonnaroo ticket. Afterwards, I played The Drums’ “It Will All End In Tears” as a joke. But then I almost started crying. One minute it was funny and the next I was getting all choked up and— you guys, I don’t know why I’m sharing this embarrassing moment with you, but all I can say is, if you can’t be embarrassing and angsty on the internet, THEN WHERE?

Anyway, this mix has three songs by the Drums (though strangely not “Submarines”), which makes it alright by me.

36. i want a rhythm to compliment my groove

This mix is about the first day of school, junior year.

Why It’s Pretentious: A lot of the time, mixes that I make are actually responses to other mixes. That way, when I start yet another one with Miles Fisher, I can pretend I’m being clever because don’t you see the subtle — nay, coy — reference. This mix is about all the songs I liked this summer that weren’t by Jeff the Brotherhood or Diarrhea Planet. I hope that when I officially start Pretentious Mixtapes I Made In College, I will still consider Jojo’s “Paint” to be “my jam” and Pitbull into The Drums to be one of the most inspired transitions of all time. In conclusion, Beyonce is pregnant? You guys, I don’t have TV.

Beach Holidaze

This mix is about MERRY CHRISTMAS, ALSO, BABY JESUS, IT’S WARM OUTSIDE.

Why It’s Pretentious: In comparison to past Christmases, it is approximately ONE MILLION DEGREES OUTSIDE. From what I’ve heard, this statement would hold true even if my fams hadn’t moved from Ohio to Northwest Arkansas. I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, indeed. In honor of the hot temps, my annual X-mix is some parts surf rock, some parts twee, some parts Hilary Duff. Try as I might, I could not fit this on a regular-sized tape, so I am sorry for that. I am also sorry because I have a great post queued up about boys with Nazi haircuts, but I feel improper posting it during Hanukkah, so you will all have to wait. ALRIGHT BOYS N GIRLS N ELVES, LET’S GO SURFIN.

MMXI

This mix is about my jams of 2011.

Why It’s Pretentious: Internet, I have few flaws— but my one fatal flaw is being bad at making end of year lists. In my mind, “the end of the year” is just the short way of saying “the most anxious and nerve-wracking time of the year.” First, everyone’s birthday is coming up (Jesus, my old roommate, my current roommate, my future roommate, my honorary roommate…) so I’m plummeting headfirst into holiday-induced poverty. Second, my grasp on the length of a year is loose at best. I still operate on school years; to me, 2011 starts sometime around late August 2010. At the same time, August 2010 - July 2011 is a little fuzzy. Therefore, most of my end of year list-making is actually me consulting Wikipedia before yelling “that album didn’t come out this year?!”

To make things easier on me, here are 11 songs I was really into in 2011 that also came out in 2011. Full disclosure: there’s probably a disproportionate amount of Infinity Cat bands. However, there’s also Beyonce, so…
