Words With Friends
This mix is about an alternate universe in which all our utterances are polysyllabic.
Why It’s Pretentious: The theme for last week’s Summer Mix Exchange Club Open To All No Girls Allowed!!!! was “Words with Friends.” Partly because I’m obsessed with the game and partly because it was the first phrase I saw when I was making the note. Mine was about a group of hipster kids who blast into space and build this new world where they only use big words, then invade a planet where they only use small words— until our hero rebels and turns into a spy for the succinct. It includes a nine minute long Issac Hayes song, which is how you know it’s good.

Under Cover
This mix is about puns and detectives.
Why It’s Pretentious: Last Thursday night, I realized the perfect mix for covers week would be an epic about a private detective called “Under Cover.” Since mixes are due Friday and I already had one done, I figured I’d make a little bonus disc for my exchange partner. I ended up throwing together this half-assed mix, not good enough to mail but internet-friendly! If you like mediocre audio quality and lots of applause between songs, this mix is for you!

1. I Am The Heart That You Call Home
This mix is about the first day of school, freshmen year of college.
Why It’s Pretentious: Remember when I kept up this blog and it was awesome because you got new music from 2-4 years ago but then I moved into my own house and started a milkshake truck and sort of dropped off the face of the world? DON’T EVEN WORRY ABOUT IT CAUSE I’M BACK.
This is one of my favorite mixes from the past few years. If I play you one of my tapes, it’ll probably be this one because it’s overtly cheerful yet also raises deep questions: Remember when music critics started treating “Ivy League” like a musical genre? Remember when you thought it was okay to put 3 Miles Fisher songs on one mix because you his EP had 4 songs, so you were being selective? Remember when you thought taking the midnight Greyhound to Cincinnati by yourself was a good idea? PROTIP: it’s not.

Don’t Call It A Comeback: Easter 2012

Is it uncouth to start an Easter mix with “Mama Said Knock You Out”?
Yes?
Oh okay. Well, I’ll make it the 4th song then.
