Thornton in My Side

This mix is about god I hate you why are you so annoying.

Why It’s Pretentious: So in high school, there was this girl whose name rhymed with Shmate Smornton who I hated more than anything in the world because she was antagonistic for no apparent reason. Also, she kept undermining my authority as Sophomore Class President. It’s like, you’re a senior, get over yourself. AMIRITE? (Yes.) If you hated anyone in 2006 but also knew you were way cooler than them, these were your jams. Shmate Smornton, you done been PUNished.

“On a Sunday” Series: The Ten Commandments

This mix is about the Ten Commandments.

Why It’s Pretentious: This is part three of a five-part trilogy about Christianity that I made for my friend for Christmas the year she came out of the atheist closet. There was a lot of pretension in that sentence, so I understand if you need to take a breather. But wait, there’s more: its actual title is something along the lines of “The On A Sunday She Thought It Through Series: Part Two - The Ten Commandments (They are Commandments! And there are Ten of them! COUNT THEM AND REPENT, YOU HELLBOUND SINNER!!!)”. YOU GUYS. WHY?

Fragment Ideas and Too Many Pronouns

This mix is about how Taking Back Sunday is the best band ever.

Why It’s Pretentious: I only have CDs from middle school in my car, so when I’m not belting along with the Backstreet Boys, I’m screaming along with Taking Back Sunday. This is a serious love, you guys. (I’m an addict for dramatics; I confuse the two for love.) One time, I let my friend listen to them on my iPod and she said, “it’s just screaming,” and I stopped talking to her. Best friends means you get what you deserve. Even though I keep forgetting they’re still a band, their lyrics and weird singing and microphone swinging will forever remain in my black emo heart.

Selections from “Theme Songs”

This mix is about me.

Why It’s Pretentious: In middle school, I had a very long playlist called “Theme Songs” that features songs that were CLEARLY WRITTEN ABOUT ME YOU GUYS. Since it’s from middle school, it a) doesn’t follow the theme of this blog and b) is even more angsty and bad than usual. (Please note how it starts with a song that is slightly sad and then jumps straight to a song about how I’m so much more awesome than you.) Obviously “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” makes an appearance, but strangely, there’s no Jenny Owen Youngs or Taking Back Sunday, which I find to be an incredibly inaccurate representation of middle school me.

Side Note: Moovers and Shakers has their Kickstarter up! If you read this blog and you’re like, wow, her taste is music is spectacular and I’d really love to help her dreams come true and maybe get one of her mixtapes mailed to me, THIS IS FOR YOU.
