Untitled (or, Mischief Managed)
This mix is about Harry Potter, the greatest seven-book trilogy ever written.
Why It’s Pretentious: I know, big shock, the girl who named her house Hogwarts is obsessed with Harry Potter and made a mix about the series. I lovingly crafted this in preparation for the seventh book— though, at 7 songs and 25 minutes, it wasn’t even close to being long enough to soundtrack my 12-6 am rapid-fire absorption of Deathly Hallows. Obviously, being high school, I chose remember the saddest and most angsty moments possible so get ready to cry your eyeballs out like those credits are already rolling. (I also worked in Morrissey because do you not know me at all?)

See Emily Play (If You Close Your Eyes…)
This mix is about oh shit my boyfriend is gay.
Why It’s Pretentious: Every week, I think to myself, “Is it time? Or will this just seem like I’m whoring out my gays for tumblr points?” Well, now that I have no dignity, LET THE GAY BEGIN. This is a true life real story about this girl whose boyfriend turned out to like other boys, which scandalized our Midwestern high school. Because I have no respect for human decency, I turned her failed relationship into the inspiration for my annual Valentine’s Day mix (but only made a few copies, of course). Much like her musical theatre boyfriend, it’s not very subtle, since every artist is, if not a flaming homosexual, then sexually questionable at the very least. Except maybe Nancy Sinatra.
Maybe.

The Iron Youth
This mix is about. Oh God, I can’t even remember the name of the book.
Why It’s Pretentious: …hold on, I’m Googling. ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. Okay, look, for every Dickens book I was forced to read and then fell in love with, there was a book about a war that I didn’t finish. Oddly enough, I made this mix for an assignment, but I can’t tell you why I picked any of the songs. Except “Meat is Murder” was about the horses being killed. That’s as far as I got in the book, so I thought it was incredibly important. I hear that it wasn’t.
So you know how there’s an unwritten rule about having no more than two songs by the same artist on a mix? But sometimes you can break it if you’re being creative, like my “Backstreet Boys interrupt country radio” mix? That’s clearly what I thought I was doing when I included a Morrissey song followed by two Smiths songs, with another Smiths song rounding out the end. COME ON, SELF. THINK, MCFLY, THINK.

Unhappy 53rd birthday to my lord and savior, Morrissey.
To celebrate, I have created a Moz-themed drink:
CHARMING MAN
Three parts Irish creme
Two parts whipped cream vodka
One part cherry rum.
A bit Irish and a bit fruity and very, very cheeky. Just like Moz.
