Pandamonium

This mix is by the White Panda and is about get off your feet and dance, bro.

Why it’s Pretentious: I’m a little bit late on this one, but to be honest, I haven’t been keeping up with my high school heroes White Panda much lately. Cause I’m an adult now, you dig? I’m glad I found it though because it features the best use of “Teach Me How to Dougie” since “Teach Me How to Study” and more pop songs I (ironically) loved in high school than I can count. Also, his mash up of Lil Wayne’s “The Fireman” is obviously infinitely better than the one that I tried to make senior year.

But uh, let’s not talk about that.

romanticized concepts

This mix is about wandering.

Why It’s Pretentious: I’m spending most of my Valentine’s Day on a plane. LA to Denver to Nashville. I always thought planes were strangely romantic, probably because every film from Casablanca to Love Actually has a plane scene, or because for a few hours, you’re getting a glimpse into the lives of complete strangers. I always wonder who people are, where they’re going, if they’re meeting someone or coming home. The possibilities.

This mix is called romanticized concepts, for short. Although it’s named after a Woodpigeon song, it’s actually based on Quadron’s “Tone” and Elizabeth & the Catapult’s “Everybody Knows,” two of the most sultry songs in existence. I originally wanted to make a playlist consisting of sparse pop songs, but it sounded too empty, so it evolved into a mix of wandering atmospheric (and often electronic) pop. Lots of sighs and strange instruments, repetitive beats and sprawling melodies. I think I was actually going on a winter flight at the time, so it’s very fitting. Very good for watching landscapes change and drifting through clouds. It’s maybe not the most traditional Valentine’s Day mix, but there’s a lot of love in it, in a lot of different ways, and I think that’s enough.

Love you all.

24. All I Want To Know Is: How Low Can You Go?

This mix is about the sound of laser beams and fog machines.

Why It’s Pretentious: Every spring, a series of things happen that always surprises me despite its consistency: my bank account plummets, my mom’s birthday comes out of nowhere, and I develop an addiction to electro remixes and mash ups. This mix is about the cheeriest of those events and features all of my favorite reworks from the end of freshman year. These were the days when I still loved Lady Winehouse Amy Gaga Lady Gaga. The days when I could recite all of the words to one of America’s most heartfelt sonnets, “Ice Cream Paint Job.” The days when I choreographed a dance to Sonicc’s remix “Bad Girls” inspired by puppeteers and performed it in the dorm elevators every afternoon.

It’s honestly a wonder that I have any friends, you guys.
