knife//heart//beats
This mix is about Bella and Jacob from Twilight.
Why It’s Pretentious: I know I promised something depressing and literary, and this is only depressing because it’s about Twilight, but look, I am very busy and very important, obviously, and this is all I had time to post. If anything, this mix is pretentious because it’s from before Twilight got popular and because I felt the need to use forward slashes and only lowercase letters in the title. And now I just feel like going into hiding.

A Four Letter Word For…
This mix is about… our anniversary, maybe? Er…
Why It’s Pretentious: Sometimes I look back at mixes that I made for people and notice little subconscious things. Like, I probably should have known that including a song with the line “What do you mean I don’t love you? I am standing here, aren’t I?” on an anniversary tape meant the relationship was a little strained. (Or that when he didn’t appreciate Klaxons covering Justin Timberlake, it was definitely not mean to be.) I don’t listen to this mix much because that incidental foreshadowing is a bit strange to hear, but I do think it’s a sweet little jumble of songs. Makes me smile.

Words With Friends
This mix is about an alternate universe in which all our utterances are polysyllabic.
Why It’s Pretentious: The theme for last week’s Summer Mix Exchange Club Open To All No Girls Allowed!!!! was “Words with Friends.” Partly because I’m obsessed with the game and partly because it was the first phrase I saw when I was making the note. Mine was about a group of hipster kids who blast into space and build this new world where they only use big words, then invade a planet where they only use small words— until our hero rebels and turns into a spy for the succinct. It includes a nine minute long Issac Hayes song, which is how you know it’s good.
