Eyes Towards Summer
This mix is by Tommie Sunshine and is about the oncoming Summer and the “musical representation of what that looks and feels like inside my mind.”
Why It’s Pretentious: I mean, did you read the description? I didn’t even include the part about “audio celebrations.” Nonetheless, if you’re not already pumped for spring break, this should do the trick. My favorite glitter-covered unicorn-licking laser-shooting trashy princess makes an appearance around the 26:30 mark and makes my heart skip a beat. Basically every song on here is solid gold and designed to make you dance ‘til you’re dead via the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Total Fosdick Move

This mix is about tribal patterns, those triangles that hipsters really like, and a thinly veiled tribute to Beyonce.
Why It’s Pretentious: Lately, I’ve been really into making mixes about genres that I don’t really listen to or know anything about. This one came about at two in the morning the other night, when I was editing papers on Harry Emerson Fosdick and decided I wanted to listen to tribal pop to get myself pumped up. Even though I may or may not have just made that genre up, I can tell the mix is a success because it includes two songs by Beyonce. I am a firm believer in the Rectangle Rule of Pop Music. That is, not all good mixes include songs by Beyonce, but all mixes that include songs by Beyonce are good.
Think about it.

21. one day, a moment, a love

This mix is about time travel, and also my 21st birthday.
Why It’s Pretentious: Uh. In case you don’t follow me on Twitter, I just want to let you know that it’s my birthday. Turning 21. On 11/11/11. So. You know. EVERYONE JUST PLAN ON ME BEING REALLY OBNOXIOUSLY EXCITED TODAY. Anyway, I made this mix in freshmen year of college. I realized I’d hit 21 on my “My Life In Song” series, so I decided to make a birthday mix for my future 21 year old self. Past self did a pretty good job; it’s short yet uplifting and starts with Ke$ha. Just like me.

24. All I Want To Know Is: How Low Can You Go?
This mix is about the sound of laser beams and fog machines.
Why It’s Pretentious: Every spring, a series of things happen that always surprises me despite its consistency: my bank account plummets, my mom’s birthday comes out of nowhere, and I develop an addiction to electro remixes and mash ups. This mix is about the cheeriest of those events and features all of my favorite reworks from the end of freshman year. These were the days when I still loved Lady Winehouse Amy Gaga Lady Gaga. The days when I could recite all of the words to one of America’s most heartfelt sonnets, “Ice Cream Paint Job.” The days when I choreographed a dance to Sonicc’s remix “Bad Girls” inspired by puppeteers and performed it in the dorm elevators every afternoon.
It’s honestly a wonder that I have any friends, you guys.
