Hot Pink Delorean

This mix is about literally nothing.

Why It’s Pretentious: Basically, I just liked the DJ trio Hot Pink Delorean and wanted to make a mix inspired by their name… Okay, mostly I wanted to steal their name for something and make a mix I could groove to. In true pretentious fashion, I thought about the songs’ colors and none of them are hot pink. (In order, they are lime green/purple/black, orange, red-orange, green, lime green/blue, orange/lime green, light blue/white.) Oh, the irony that you don’t understand.

Vinyl Sticker, Big Block Letters

This mix is about narrowly avoided friendship break-ups.

Why It’s Pretentious: No high school friendship is complete without some major drama. When my best friend and I had a huge fight in senior year, I spent the night doing the only thing I know how to do to when I’m upset, i.e., mixtaping and expressing my feelings via The Pussycat Dolls. In true high school fashion, I can’t remember what we were fighting about about and by the morning, everything was resolved. On the other hand, “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” has never been the same since. Actually, this mix was never supposed to see the light of day — she doesn’t even know it exists — but I kind of dig its pathetic electronic blues, so. Happy Monday!

Total Fosdick Move

This mix is about tribal patterns, those triangles that hipsters really like, and a thinly veiled tribute to Beyonce.

Why It’s Pretentious: Lately, I’ve been really into making mixes about genres that I don’t really listen to or know anything about. This one came about at two in the morning the other night, when I was editing papers on Harry Emerson Fosdick and decided I wanted to listen to tribal pop to get myself pumped up. Even though I may or may not have just made that genre up, I can tell the mix is a success because it includes two songs by Beyonce. I am a firm believer in the Rectangle Rule of Pop Music. That is, not all good mixes include songs by Beyonce, but all mixes that include songs by Beyonce are good.

Think about it.
