Leave the Sleeper

This mix is about Sydney Carton from A Tale of Two Cities.

Why It’s Pretentious: I adored Tale of Two Cities because I like really long drawn out stories with overindulgent characterizations and little, if any, distinguishable plot. And also moody misunderstood criminals who sacrifice themselves for the one they love. The title comes from the scene in which Carton tells Lucie that he’s hopelessly in love with her: “Since I knew you… I have had unformed ideas of striving afresh, beginning anew, shaking off sloth and sensuality, and fighting out the abandoned fight. A dream, all a dream, that ends in nothing, and leaves the sleeper where he lay down, but I wish you to know that you inspired it.” I mean, SWOON.

Selections from “Theme Songs”

This mix is about me.

Why It’s Pretentious: In middle school, I had a very long playlist called “Theme Songs” that features songs that were CLEARLY WRITTEN ABOUT ME YOU GUYS. Since it’s from middle school, it a) doesn’t follow the theme of this blog and b) is even more angsty and bad than usual. (Please note how it starts with a song that is slightly sad and then jumps straight to a song about how I’m so much more awesome than you.) Obviously “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” makes an appearance, but strangely, there’s no Jenny Owen Youngs or Taking Back Sunday, which I find to be an incredibly inaccurate representation of middle school me.

Side Note: Moovers and Shakers has their Kickstarter up! If you read this blog and you’re like, wow, her taste is music is spectacular and I’d really love to help her dreams come true and maybe get one of her mixtapes mailed to me, THIS IS FOR YOU.

The Fox and the Hound

This mix is by devincastro and is about The Fox and the Hound.

Why it’s Pretentious: This mix is about The Fox and the Hound. You guys. Just download it right now. Oh, that’s not enough, you scoff? 1. Obviously you don’t understand irony and I have taught you nothing. 2. Let me throw some names at you: The Shins. DeVotchKa. Regina Spektor. The Weepies. Mumford & Sons. Explosions in the Sky. Panda Bear. Beach House. This is what we call a high-school/present-day crossover and this is what we call a stellar mix. Also, Disney movies. Or Disney films, rather.

Download via Mediafire.

Untitled (or, Mischief Managed)

This mix is about Harry Potter, the greatest seven-book trilogy ever written.

Why It’s Pretentious: I know, big shock, the girl who named her house Hogwarts is obsessed with Harry Potter and made a mix about the series. I lovingly crafted this in preparation for the seventh book— though, at 7 songs and 25 minutes, it wasn’t even close to being long enough to soundtrack my 12-6 am rapid-fire absorption of Deathly Hallows. Obviously, being high school, I chose remember the saddest and most angsty moments possible so get ready to cry your eyeballs out like those credits are already rolling. (I also worked in Morrissey because do you not know me at all?)

TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT. RAISE YER WANDS UP, WIZARDS. MISCHIEF MANAGED.
